Bridgestone has unveiled two tyre specifications for Formula E’s 2026/27 season, reporting a 65% recycled and renewable materials allocation that includes ISCC PLUS-certified resources accounted for through mass balance. The tyres were presented in Rome on 30 September, ahead of the company becoming the championship’s sole tyre supplier.

The primary POTENZA GEN4 is an all-weather tyre developed to balance grip and durability throughout a race. Bridgestone says its specially engineered polymer compound is designed to cope with temperature changes and varied track conditions, under rules that generally do not allow tyres to be changed mid-race.

The second specification, POTENZA GEN4 for TYPHOON TYRE, is dedicated to heavy-wet conditions. It incorporates rice-husk-derived silica and technology intended to improve water dispersal and wet grip where standing water is present. “Typhoon Tyre” is the FIA’s specification name for the championship’s heavy-wet tyre.

Bridgestone reports more than 6,500km of testing with actual GEN4 vehicles in Europe. Development work considered tyre contact patches, warm-up behaviour, performance over longer runs and driver feedback. These performance descriptions remain the company’s claims. BRIDGESTONE Motorsport

What the 65% allocation means

In its launch announcement, Bridgestone identifies carbon black derived from end-of-life tyre pyrolysis oil and silica derived from rice husks among the materials used. Carbon black manufactured using pyrolysis oil should be distinguished from carbon black recovered directly from the solid output of tyre pyrolysis.

The 65% figure covers recycled and renewable materials together. It also includes certified resources attributed through mass balance, making “allocation” an essential qualification.

As ISCC explains, this approach tracks certified inputs through production systems where they can mix with conventional feedstocks. Certified accounting then attributes those inputs to outputs, taking processing losses into account.

Consequently, the allocation does not establish that every individual tyre physically contains precisely 65% recycled and renewable material. It describes a materials sourcing and accounting claim, rather than a measured carbon-emissions reduction. For tyre developers and materials suppliers, that distinction is central to understanding the announcement.
