Pellon Tyres and Autocentre has installed a new solar power system at its Halifax depot as the independent garage looks to reduce electricity use from the grid and manage rising operating costs. The investment reflects growing pressure on tyre retailers and autocentres to improve energy efficiency while maintaining workshop capacity.

Running a modern tyre and autocentre requires significant electricity. Workshop equipment such as tyre fitting machines, wheel balancers, lifts, compressors, diagnostic systems, lighting and IT infrastructure all contribute to daily demand.
For independent operators, that energy use has become a more visible cost. Business rates, insurance, fuel and utilities have all increased pressure on local garages, making long-term efficiency measures more relevant to the tyre retail sector.
Pellon Tyres said the installation is intended to reduce its reliance on bought-in electricity. The system is based around a SolaX solar installation and includes smart monitoring to track production and consumption across the working day.

The Halifax business said the system should help power some of the equipment used in daily workshop operations when conditions allow. Solar panels can still generate electricity in cloudy conditions, although output varies according to daylight and weather.
The move is not presented as a short-term saving measure. Instead, Pellon Tyres said it forms part of a longer-term plan to manage future operating costs and reduce exposure to electricity price changes.
Eric Roberts, managing director at Pellon Tyres and Autocentre Ltd, said: “It is another investment in the future of Pellon Tyres and the customers we serve throughout Halifax and Calderdale.”
The investment comes as sustainability becomes a more practical issue for tyre businesses, from waste handling and recycling to energy use and fleet efficiency. Tyre News has recently reported on the wider circular economy pressures facing the sector, including concerns over used tyre recycling and export controls.
The same direction is visible across fleet tyre management. Recent Tyre News coverage of Hankook’s retread activity showed how cost control and lower lifecycle emissions are increasingly linked in commercial tyre operations.
For local garages, the issue is more immediate. Energy efficiency can support margins, reduce overhead volatility and improve the environmental profile of workshop operations without changing the core service offered to motorists.
Pellon Tyres said the solar installation follows previous investment in tyre fitting equipment, wheel alignment systems, vehicle diagnostics and workshop facilities. The business serves motorists across Halifax, Calderdale, Brighouse, Elland and surrounding areas.
The company also said it continues to recycle tyres responsibly and dispose of waste through approved channels. Adding solar generation gives the business another route to reduce its operational footprint.
More broadly, the move points to a quieter shift in the independent garage sector. Energy management is becoming part of workshop planning, alongside equipment investment, compliance and customer service. For tyre retailers with suitable premises, solar power may increasingly form part of that calculation.
Pellon Tyres and Autocentre is a family-run Halifax business offering tyres, MOTs, batteries, exhausts, servicing and repairs, alongside wheel balancing, tracking and diagnostics for motorists across Calderdale. For more information visit: https://www.pellonautocentre.com/pellon-tyres-and-auto-centre/
