Pony Rescue Highlights Hidden Risks of Abandoned Tractor Tyres

A pony found wedged inside a large tractor tyre in Stoke-on-Trent has prompted a reminder about the risks posed by discarded agricultural tyres. The animal was rescued by the RSPCA after members of the public spotted it trapped in a field, with local residents helping to lift the tyre during the careful extraction.

A welfare rescue with a tyre industry lesson

The pony, believed to be an adult and around 14hh, was found completely stuck inside a tractor tyre lying on its side. According to the RSPCA, the animal was breathing but clearly distressed when animal rescue officer Nicola Riley arrived.

The rescue had to be carried out in stages. Riley first eased the pony’s front feet free, then worked its shoulder clear before releasing its neck and front end. She described it as “a very delicate rescue” and said the animal was “completely wedged against the tyre”.

Once freed, the pony was said to be wobbly but soon returned to grazing. Riley stayed at the scene for around an hour to monitor the animal and its companion. The tyre was later removed from the field.

Why tyre storage matters on rural sites

While unusual, the incident illustrates a wider issue for farms, smallholdings and rural businesses. Large off-highway tyres can remain on land long after their original use has ended. If left unsecured, they can create hazards for livestock, wildlife and people.

The tyre trade already faces close scrutiny over end-of-life tyre handling. Recent Tyre News coverage has reported on pressure for stronger waste tyre regulation, including industry calls for faster circular economy reform and tighter controls on exports.

For agricultural tyres, the question is not only what happens at the point of replacement. It is also whether removed tyres are stored safely, collected by authorised operators and kept out of situations where they become environmental or welfare risks.

A reminder for collection and compliance

The Environment Agency’s T8 guidance covers small-scale mechanical treatment of end-of-life tyres, including baling, shredding, granulating and retreading. It also sets storage and treatment limits for operators working under the exemption.

Tyre News has also covered proposed agricultural tyre recycling charges in Ireland, where an extended producer responsibility approach would apply charges to machinery tyres. That debate underlines how agricultural and off-highway tyres are increasingly part of wider recycling policy discussions.

In this case, no further welfare concerns were reported, and the pony’s owner was given advice and paperwork. For the tyre and farming sectors, the incident is a practical reminder that large tyres should not be treated as harmless field clutter once they leave service.
