The Pirelli P Zero tyre, a symbol of performance and technological innovation, is marking its 40th anniversary in 2025. First introduced in 1985 on the Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, the P Zero is regarded as the first true ultra high-performance (UHP) tyre, revolutionising the industry and paving the way for a new segment.
Over its four generations, the P Zero has evolved into a tyre of choice for high-performance vehicles, earning more than 3,000 bespoke homologations for iconic brands including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren, and Aston Martin. Its innovative design and engineering have equipped some of the most legendary cars in history, such as the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Countach, and McLaren P1.
The origins of the P Zero can be traced to the high-performance demands of the 1980s, where turbocharged and supercharged sports cars pushed tyre technology to new limits. Building on the success of the P7 – the first low-profile tyre – Pirelli introduced the P Zero, combining the best of racing technology with practical performance.
The P Zero's tread design was revolutionary, blending characteristics of wet, dry, and intermediate tyres to deliver unmatched grip and stability. Its motorsport roots ensured top-tier performance, even being used successfully in the Sanremo Rally by Miki Biasion.
Throughout its journey, the P Zero has been at the forefront of Pirelli’s innovations. In 2019, the Elect package introduced UHP tyres designed specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles. By 2023, the P Zero E became the first UHP tyre incorporating at least 55% bio-based or recycled materials, achieving a triple A rating under EU tyre labelling.
The Perfect Fit strategy, pioneered by the P Zero, tailors tyre specifications to meet the needs of individual vehicle models, ensuring optimal performance across premium sedans, SUVs, and supercars.
Looking ahead, Pirelli plans to unveil the fifth-generation P Zero in the coming months. This evolution promises to continue the legacy of cutting-edge technology, maintaining the P Zero’s status as a leader in the ultra high-performance tyre market.
