Nexen Tire has received formal validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term greenhouse gas reduction goals. The approval confirms the company’s targets align with climate science and the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway. Nexen Tire plans to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 58.8% and Scope 3 by 35% by 2034 versus 2023. The move supports global automaker requirements for credible, measurable decarbonisation across supply chains.
The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF that validates corporate climate targets against 1.5°C-aligned criteria.
Nexen Tire says a carbon-neutrality roadmap will guide delivery, including facility efficiency upgrades, an accelerated energy transition, and increased renewable energy use.
Nexen Tire has expanded its enterprise-wide greenhouse gas inventories to cover all 15 Scope 3 categories, with consolidated tracking across domestic and overseas sites. An ESG Operational Committee meets monthly to manage a phased reduction programme and monitor progress against the SBTi-approved trajectory.
“This SBTi approval is a meaningful step forward, demonstrating that NEXEN TIRE is establishing a climate response framework aligned with global standards,” said John Bosco (Hyeon Suk) Kim, CEO of NEXEN TIRE. “We are committed to leading the way to carbon neutrality by faithfully achieving emissions reduction targets based on scientific standards through enterprise-wide efforts.”
Automakers increasingly require suppliers to show verified, science-based reductions. SBTi validation can support procurement checks and external ESG assessments.
