
Giti Tire has described the Euro 7 emissions framework as confirmation of its existing research priorities rather than a major change in direction. The Singapore-headquartered manufacturer says its development programmes already address tyre wear, rolling resistance and durability. These areas will become increasingly important as European rules introduce limits for non-exhaust emissions from tyres.
Tyre development has traditionally focused on handling, braking, mileage, comfort and fuel efficiency. Euro 7 adds tyre abrasion to the regulatory picture.
The legislation introduces controls for non-exhaust emissions, including particles released through tyre and brake wear. It represents the European Union’s first direct regulation of these emission sources across vehicle categories.
Giti said the framework validates research already taking place within its technical programmes. The company views harmonised testing as a way to provide clearer development targets across the tyre supply chain.
The regulatory importance extends beyond laboratory compliance. Tyre wear contributes to microplastic releases into air, soil and water. Researchers at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre have identified tyre wear as a significant source of unintentionally released microplastics.
Reducing abrasion cannot be treated as an isolated engineering target. Changes to tread compounds or pattern designs can affect wet grip, rolling resistance, handling and product life.
Giti’s stated approach combines tread geometry, rubber chemistry and manufacturing accuracy. Its current research covers new elastomer blends, lower friction, longer service life and tighter production controls.
The company said engineers must reduce material loss without weakening the safety and response characteristics expected by motorists. That balance will be central to future product development as abrasion thresholds enter type-approval requirements.
Similar priorities can be seen in Giti’s recent product work. Its A-rated Ecoroad truck tyre range uses a silica-based compound designed to reduce heat generation and energy loss.
Tyre News has also reported on Giti’s passenger tyre prototype containing 93% sustainable materials. The concept combines renewable and recycled inputs with new manufacturing processes.
Giti supplies original equipment tyres to vehicle manufacturers in several international markets. The company says this work provides practical insight into increasingly detailed requirements covering efficiency, safety and vehicle-specific performance.
Electric vehicles add another layer of complexity. Their weight and torque characteristics can increase pressure on tyre wear performance. At the same time, low rolling resistance remains important for vehicle range.
Giti has previously developed tyres intended to balance rolling resistance with braking, handling and wear for electric vehicle applications. Its AA-rated tyres used during an electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz record attempt reflected that broader engineering approach.
Euro 7 establishes the legislative basis for controlling tyre abrasion, while detailed limits and implementation stages rely on work conducted through United Nations Economic Commission for Europe processes.
UNECE approved abrasion limits for new passenger-car and van tyres in March 2026. The organisation estimates that the limits could reduce overall tyre abrasion by more than 10%.
For manufacturers, the rules create a common benchmark for comparing wear performance. They may also increase the value of compound research, production consistency and reliable abrasion testing.
Giti’s position is that these demands reinforce its established development path. However, compliance will ultimately depend on measurable results under harmonised tests rather than existing research commitments alone.
