
Kumho Tire has officially approved plans to construct its first European manufacturing facility, selecting Opole in south-west Poland as the location for a major new tyre plant. The investment, worth approximately £443 million (KRW 860.6 billion), marks a significant expansion of the company's global manufacturing footprint.
The facility will focus on producing passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres, including light truck applications. Initial planned capacity stands at around 6 million tyres annually in the first phase, with operations scheduled to commence in August 2028. The company has indicated that capacity could be expanded in subsequent phases depending on market demand.
The decision to establish a manufacturing presence in Europe reflects the region's importance to global tyre demand, with the continent accounting for roughly a quarter of worldwide tyre consumption. By producing locally, Kumho aims to strengthen relationships with European original equipment manufacturers whilst improving its competitiveness in high-value segments such as high-performance and large-diameter tyres.
The Polish location offers several advantages, including reduced lead times for European customers and enhanced supply chain stability. This local production capability is expected to give Kumho greater flexibility in responding to market requirements and customer specifications across the continent.
The project has received formal approval from Kumho Tire's Board of Directors. With construction and commissioning activities now set to proceed, the company is working towards the target start-up date of August 2028.
The Opole facility represents a substantial commitment to the European market and positions Kumho alongside other major tyre manufacturers who have established production operations in Central and Eastern Europe in recent years. Poland has emerged as an attractive location for automotive industry investment, offering access to skilled labour and proximity to key European markets.
