West Yorkshire Police has joined TyreSafe’s network of more than 260 partner organisations, with the two organisations set to work together on tyre safety awareness across the county.
The partnership will encourage drivers to check tyre pressure, tread depth and general condition regularly. TyreSafe recommends carrying out checks at least once a month and before long journeys.
The agreement sits within West Yorkshire’s wider Vision Zero activity, which aims to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries by 2040. TyreSafe was already working within that regional framework after becoming a West Yorkshire Vision Zero partner in January 2025. West Yorkshire Police is also an established member of the Vision Zero partnership.
The new development therefore creates a direct relationship between the police force and TyreSafe rather than marking the charity’s first involvement in West Yorkshire road safety work.
West Yorkshire recorded 51 road deaths and 1,210 serious injuries during 2025, according to figures cited by TyreSafe. The figures cover road casualties generally and should not be interpreted as tyre-related collision statistics.
Stuart Lovatt, chairman of TyreSafe, said the partnership would combine the police force’s reach and expertise with TyreSafe’s specialist knowledge and campaigns to improve understanding of tyre maintenance.
Inspector Claire Gray, Roads Policing Support and Proactive Intercept Team Inspector at West Yorkshire Police, said vehicle safety formed part of the force’s wider road safety work.
“Tyres are fundamental to a vehicle’s ability to stop, steer and maintain grip,” she said. “We are pleased to be working with TyreSafe to help raise awareness and encourage road users to take responsibility for checking and maintaining their tyres.”
The announcement focuses on education and awareness and does not specify additional roadside tyre inspections, enforcement targets, officer training or new arrangements for sharing tyre-defect collision data.
