BKT Harnesses Rainwater to Advance Sustainable Tyre Production

BKT Tires has taken a strategic step towards responsible manufacturing by implementing large-scale rainwater harvesting systems across its production facilities. This move is part of the company’s wider environmental programme, focusing on reducing freshwater dependency and embedding circular resource use into its operations.

At a time when water scarcity and climate-related risks are rising, BKT’s rainwater harvesting initiative places the tyre manufacturer among sector leaders using innovation to drive environmental resilience.

Smart Infrastructure for Rainwater Collection and Reuse

BKT’s approach centres on capturing rainwater from both rooftop surfaces and road-paved areas at its facilities. The collected rainwater is stored and used to recharge groundwater, decreasing the manufacturer’s draw on external water supplies.

These systems are not standalone — they’re integrated into a wider water management strategy that includes:

▪ AC condensate capture
▪ Wastewater recycling
▪ Advanced reuse technology for processed water

This integrated model not only reduces consumption but helps ensure consistent water availability for industrial operations, even during seasonal shortages.

Tangible Water Savings and Environmental Gains

During the 2023–24 fiscal year, BKT reported:

▪ A 43.54% reduction in groundwater use
153,435 kilolitres of water conserved — representing 7.93% of its total annual water consumption

The company’s Bhuj plant demonstrates how sustainability and biodiversity can align. Rainwater ponds at the site not only provide usable water but also support aquatic life, attracting native fish and stork populations.

Strategic Fit with Climate and Sustainability Targets

BKT’s rainwater systems form part of a larger programme aimed at reducing environmental footprint, building climate resilience, and aligning with circular economy principles. The company is also pushing for broader adoption across its supply chain by encouraging suppliers and partners to raise their own environmental standards.

This model positions BKT not only as a responsible manufacturer but also as a key contributor to sustainability leadership within the global tyre sector.

BKT’s investment in rainwater harvesting reflects a broader shift in tyre manufacturing towards climate adaptation, automation, and resource efficiency. As the industry moves to meet environmental compliance targets and reduce operational risk, manufacturers are increasingly adopting integrated systems that serve both ecological and production needs. Water is emerging as a critical resource and proactive conservation, such as BKT’s, will be essential for sustainable growth across tyre plants worldwide.
