Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT) has released new data from its 2023–24 financial year highlighting measurable progress on environmental goals and expanding its focus to education, healthcare, and social equity across its communities.
The India-headquartered tyre manufacturer, known for its off-highway and specialty tyre range, has adopted a wide-ranging sustainability approach — verified by Bureau Veritas — that now touches every level of its operations, from emissions reduction to social welfare programmes.
During the 2023–24 financial year, BKT planted nearly 25,000 trees over more than 48,000 square metres, as part of a biodiversity and reforestation drive. Alongside this, the company reported a reduction of approximately 28,000 tonnes of CO₂, supported by enhanced circular economy measures including increased use of recyclable materials and reduced waste output.
These milestones reflect BKT’s ongoing investment in energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing practices at its facilities — particularly its largest production site in Bhuj, Gujarat.
One of BKT’s most impactful social projects is its continued support for the Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-profit organisation delivering free meals to schoolchildren across India. In 2023–24, BKT helped provide daily nutritious meals to over 2.2 million children, including 28,000 in Bhuj alone.
To further scale this impact, a new canteen facility with a capacity to serve 50,000 meals per day was opened in Bhuj, strengthening the company’s role in enhancing child nutrition and school attendance in underserved communities.
BKT has also directed resources into healthcare access and educational development across rural and disadvantaged regions of India. Its health initiatives support both preventive care and the enhancement of local medical infrastructure, including funding for hospitals and care centres in vulnerable areas.
In education, the company backs teacher training, the provision of modern learning environments, and access to resources for students who face systemic barriers. These initiatives aim to improve education quality and foster long-term development in rural and semi-urban communities.
BKT’s wide-reaching ESG strategy reflects a growing trend among tyre manufacturers to extend sustainability beyond environmental goals. By linking its emissions reduction and circular economy efforts with health, education, and community development, BKT reinforces its brand as a socially responsible operator in the off-highway and specialty tyre sector. This integrative approach also positions BKT as a potential model for other firms looking to balance decarbonisation with social equity.
