Maxam RowXtra Extends VF Technology Into Implement Tyres

Maxam Tire has expanded its agricultural range with the MS963R RowXtra, a steel-belted Very High Flexion radial tyre for balers, hay mergers, seeders and other implements. The launch adds another VF option to a market increasingly focused on balancing heavier machinery loads with lower inflation pressures, soil protection and durability in demanding field conditions.

The MS963R RowXtra is designed for implement work including planting, ploughing and ripping, with Maxam positioning the tyre around load capacity, flotation and resistance to field damage. Its construction combines steel belts and flexible sidewalls with what the manufacturer describes as a stubble-resistant compound intended to improve service life across different operating environments.

The central technical claim is familiar to the VF category but increasingly relevant beyond tractor fitments. Maxam says the RowXtra can carry up to 40% more load at standard inflation pressures than a conventional tyre, or operate at up to 40% lower pressure while carrying the same load. Those figures are manufacturer claims and actual operating pressures will depend on factors including tyre size, load, speed and application.

That distinction matters because greater load capacity and lower ground pressure represent two different ways of exploiting VF technology. An operator may use the casing's additional flexion to accommodate a heavier load, or use the available capacity to reduce inflation pressure at an equivalent load. For farmers and contractors concerned about soil impact, how the tyre is specified and operated is therefore as important as the VF designation itself.

Implement Tyres Join The Soil Compaction Debate

Much of the agricultural tyre industry's discussion around VF technology has historically concentrated on tractors and other powered machinery. Increasingly, however, tyre manufacturers are applying the same principle to the implements and trailers working behind them.

Maxam's launch is not isolated evidence of that shift. Mitas introduced its TERRAGUARD VF implement radial earlier this year, also positioning higher load capacity and lower operating pressures as responses to the demands of modern implements. The commercial implication for tyre dealers is that agricultural specification is becoming more dependent on understanding the complete machine combination rather than simply supplying a replacement in the correct size. Implement load, operating speed, road mileage, field conditions and inflation pressure can all affect whether the theoretical advantages of a VF casing translate into useful operating benefits.

Recent demonstrations have also put greater emphasis on pressure management. Trelleborg used a UK field demonstration in 2025 to show how changing pressures between field and road operation can affect traction, soil impact, fuel consumption and tyre wear. Steel Construction Targets Field Durability

Alongside VF capability, Maxam is emphasising the RowXtra's all-steel construction. The company says the steel-belt structure is intended to improve resistance to cuts and impacts, while the compound has been developed to withstand stubble damage. A ribbed tread pattern is designed to maintain ground contact while limiting rolling resistance and soil disturbance.

For implement applications, that durability proposition is commercially significant. A tyre capable of operating at lower pressures still has to withstand stubble, debris, substantial axle loads and, depending on the application, periods of higher-speed road transport. The purchasing calculation therefore extends beyond flotation to casing life, damage resistance and downtime.

Greg Gilland, vice president of agriculture at Maxam Tire, said the development reflects demand from farmers for VF solutions capable of handling heavier loads and higher operating speeds while reducing field impact.

"As farming equipment continues to evolve for improved productivity, farmers and growers look for VF tire solutions that handle heavier loads while operating at high speeds and minimizing the impact on their fields," Gilland said.

Maxam says additional RowXtra sizes are planned as the range develops. That expansion will be worth watching because the breadth of future fitments should provide a clearer indication of the machinery and application segments the company expects the product to address.

For the agricultural tyre trade, the RowXtra is therefore more useful as another sign of VF technology broadening across the machinery combination than as evidence of a fundamental change in the market by itself. The established 40% VF proposition gives operators greater flexibility over load and pressure, but the operational result depends on which side of that equation they choose to exploit.

As implements become heavier and soil protection remains an important consideration, that choice is likely to put greater emphasis on accurate load and pressure advice. The opportunity for tyre dealers is not simply to sell a more sophisticated casing, but to help customers determine how its additional capability should be used.
