
LKQ Europe has reaffirmed its commitment to become a net-zero emissions company by 2050, aligning its corporate strategy with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement targets.
The European arm of global vehicle parts and recycling specialist LKQ Corporation outlined its environmental ambitions in the company’s 2021 Sustainability Report, detailing a roadmap centred on emissions reduction, circular economy practices, and future-proofing the independent aftermarket sector.
Environmental sustainability has long been a core principle for LKQ. As the world’s largest recycler of vehicles, the company recycles over 90% of materials from the vehicles it procures. In 2021 alone, 780,000 vehicles were processed, resulting in 13.8 million recycled parts, 2.1 million tyres, and over 1.1 million tonnes of crushed auto scrap.
LKQ’s remanufacturing operations further support its sustainability mission, saving 26,000 tonnes of raw materials, 208,000 MWh of electricity, and avoiding 43,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions globally in the past year.
According to Arnd Franz, CEO of LKQ Europe,
"At LKQ Europe, our sustainability approach is based on the three pillars planet, people and communities… We are on a continuous path towards becoming a net-zero emissions company by 2050."
Looking ahead, LKQ Europe is preparing for the sharp rise in electrified vehicle components. With an estimated 34 million high-voltage batteries expected in Europe by 2030, the company is already exploring scalable solutions for repair, remanufacturing, reuse and recycling of traction batteries.
The 2021 acquisition of Green Bean Battery, a US-based hybrid battery specialist, adds a proprietary reconditioning technology to LKQ’s toolkit—extending the lifecycle of hybrid batteries and reducing waste.
The company also wants to lead the independent aftermarket in electrification, positioning itself as a first-mover in offering EV battery solutions and services.

LKQ’s near-term climate goals include cutting Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030, relative to 2021 levels and normalised to revenue. Pilot projects using battery-electric and HVO-powered delivery vans are already underway in several countries, with positive early results. Beyond environmental goals, LKQ is also investing in its people and workplace culture. A recent global employee survey, “Your Voice Matters,” led to actionable insights and new engagement initiatives. One example, the “Let’s Move Together” campaign, promoted physical activity as a way to improve mental wellbeing across the workforce.
