TyreSafe Launches Ultimate Agricultural Tyre Safety Guide

To mark this year’s Farm Safety Week (21–25 July), UK tyre safety charity TyreSafe has launched a new Ultimate Guide to Agricultural Tyres in collaboration with Tilly Pass, the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies), and Micheldever.

Designed to support farmers and land-based workers, the campaign delivers practical tyre safety guidance at a critical point in the agricultural calendar. Long hours, heavy machinery, and challenging terrain all heighten the risks of tyre-related incidents during the busy summer months.

Five Essentials for Safer Farm Tyre Use

At the heart of the new guide is The Farmer’s Five, a safety checklist developed to simplify key tyre checks for farming environments. Each step focuses on reducing risk, improving performance, and avoiding costly failures:

• Tyre Pressure: Ensures optimal traction, minimises soil compaction, and helps reduce fuel use.
• Tyre Type: Selecting the right construction and tread pattern improves durability and soil protection.
• Weight & Load: Staying within legal and safe weight limits prevents blowouts and downtime.
• Inspection & Maintenance: Regular checks help detect early damage, especially on infrequently used equipment.
• Storage: Proper off-season storage reduces degradation and prolongs tyre life.

Industry-Backed Guidance

The guide is supported by expert input from across the farming and tyre industries. According to Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, the rural environment presents unique tyre challenges: “Sloped ground, uneven terrain, heavy loads, and variable weather conditions all demand tyres to be in top condition. A tyre failure in the middle of harvest could mean the difference between a good year and a bad one.”

Stephanie Berkeley of the Farm Safety Foundation added that tyre safety is often overlooked: “This year’s campaign is about tackling common risks in practical ways. Tyre condition is a vital part of that.”

The initiative is also backed by Tilly Pass, which specialises in trailer safety checks, and tyre distributor Micheldever. Jane Gurney MBE, founder of Tilly Pass, said the guide gives farmers actionable clarity on roadworthiness. Matt Richardson from Micheldever’s Protyre division noted that agricultural tyres face “extreme pressures” and need careful management.

Accessible Advice and Downloadable Resources

The new guide, which is free to download from the TyreSafe website, is part of a wider suite of educational materials aimed at reducing tyre-related incidents in agriculture. Farmers and operators are encouraged to adopt The Farmer’s Five as part of their routine machinery checks throughout the harvest period and beyond.
