WD-40 Company Limited has expanded its Specialist range with a new bio-based multi-use lubricant for European workshop, vehicle maintenance and everyday service use. The company says WD-40 Specialist Bio Lubricant Multi-Use is the first product in its category to achieve EU Ecolabel certification under lubricant criteria, adding a recognised environmental credential to a routine workshop consumable.

WD-40 Specialist Bio Lubricant Multi-Use has been introduced across Europe as part of the company’s professional maintenance range. The product is designed for general lubrication, penetration and moisture displacement, placing it in the same day-to-day consumables category used across workshops, tyre bays and service centres.

For tyre retailers and fast-fit operators, the launch is relevant because lubricants and maintenance sprays are part of the working environment around wheel service, bay equipment, hand tools and general vehicle repair. It also arrives as aftermarket businesses examine more sustainable products beyond tyres themselves.

Certification and formulation

WD-40 says the lubricant is formulated with 85% bio-based ingredients and is suitable for use on metals, plastics and rubber. The company also says the product has been certified under the EU Ecolabel scheme, which assesses lubricants against criteria including biodegradability, bioaccumulation and aquatic toxicity.

The European Commission’s lubricant criteria sit under Decision (EU) 2018/1702, which established EU Ecolabel requirements for the product group. The EU says the label is intended to identify lubricants with lower aquatic impact, restricted hazardous substances and performance comparable with conventional alternatives.

WD-40 Company said the product’s certification means it has been checked against strict environmental standards across its lifecycle. The company describes the lubricant as part of its wider environmental impact work, including product development and supply-chain sustainability.

Why it matters to tyre businesses

The tyre trade is increasingly being judged on more than tyre choice, disposal routes and recycling compliance. Workshop consumables, cleaning products and maintenance materials are also becoming part of procurement discussions, especially for larger retail chains, fleets and service groups.

In practice, a multi-surface product compatible with metal, plastic and rubber has a clear role in tyre-fitting and service environments. Tyre bays routinely handle metal tools, rubber components, plastic trims and vehicle fixtures, making compatibility a practical issue rather than a marketing detail.

Wider market context

Environmental claims around automotive products are facing greater scrutiny, particularly where buyers need evidence for environmental, social and governance reporting. Independent certification can therefore help procurement teams distinguish between broad sustainability language and products tested against defined criteria.

That is significant for tyre retailers, fleet service providers and workshop groups under pressure to reduce operational impacts. While tyres remain the central sustainability issue for the sector, the products used around them are now part of the same conversation.

WD-40’s launch shows how environmental credentials are moving beyond tyres and into everyday workshop products. It also signals how purchasing patterns may change as mainstream brands bring certified lower-impact options into established maintenance categories.
